TPMS: tyre-pressure monitoring
Direct and indirect monitoring, changing wheels and checking the vehicle placard.
TPMS monitors tyre pressure and warns of a possible loss of pressure. It does not replace a pressure-gauge check.
Two system types
- Direct TPMS receives data from pressure sensors in the wheels.
- Indirect systems use wheel-rotation signals and other vehicle data to detect signs of pressure loss; there may be no individual pressure sensor in each wheel.
When changing wheels
For direct systems, select sensors with the correct protocol and perform registration if required by the manufacturer. Indirect systems may need initialisation after the correct pressures are set. Follow the vehicle handbook.
Do not use an emulator simply to suppress the warning: it does not repair a leak or fault.
Which pressure should you use?
Use the vehicle placard and handbook for the tyre size and load. Sidewall figures are not the recommended inflation pressure for your vehicle. Inspection requirements depend on the country and applicable regulations.
